Facility Features

Cabins 1-4: The Center has four (4) cabins with three (3) bedrooms. Two of the bedrooms have (14) over/under bunk beds and the third bedroom has two twin-sized beds. Cabins have no interior doors. Cabins have air conditioning and heating. (30) people may be accommodated in each of the four cabins. One bathroom in each cabin. Three Showers and Three Toilets per bathroom. 480 square feet per bedroom Cabins are ideal for same gender groups such as scouts, fraternities and sororities, church retreats, school groups, and professional organizations.

Lodges 5 & 6: The Center has two (2) lodges with six (6) bedrooms. Each bedroom has a door and eight (8) bunks. Lodges have air conditioning and heating. (48) people may be accommodated in each of the two lodges. Two bathrooms in each lodge. Three Showers and Two Toilets per bathroom. 228 square feet per bedroom Lodges are ideal for mixed gender groups requiring separate bedrooms and bathrooms. Lodges have a common area in their center where access to the bathrooms may be had from each of the bedrooms.

Dorm Rooms 1-6: The Center has six (6) dorm rooms. These are located to the rear and underneath the Henrico Administration Building. Each Room has two (2) twin beds. Dorm Rooms have air conditioning and heating. (2) people may be accommodated in each of the dorm rooms. One bathroom in each Dorm Room. One Shower and One Toilet per bathroom. 161 square feet per dorm room. Dorm Rooms are ideal for guests requiring a more exclusive stay away from other guests and where having a more traditional, hotel-like stay is desired.

Aquatics Resource Center (ARC) Marine Science Laboratory & Classroom: The Classroom may accommodate groups up to (36) in classroom style set-up and is an Environmental Education resource center and private group function space. The Environmental Education program allows students to tour and interact with Virginia wildlife including Box turtles, Black Rat Snake, Northern Water Snake, Corn Snake, and a variety of local freshwater fish.

Betty Larson Campfire Amphitheater: Thanks to the contributions from Ms. Betty Larson and Lowes, the Center has an amphitheater that may accommodate groups up to (153) adults. The Center provides all necessary firewood and fire-starting implements for your evening’s enjoyment. All you have to do is ignite and extinguish the fire! S’mores are also available to complete your fireside experience.

Chesterfield Lodge: The Chesterfield Lodge is a two room building with two (2) full bathooms and a fully functional kitchen. One of the rooms has 2 bunk beds, closets and a dresser. The other room, often used in the summer as a clinic, has six (6) cots, kitchen area, and large meeting table. This meeting space accomidates up to (15) adults.

Recreation Hall: The Recreation Hall, attached to the Dining Hall, is a 1,944 square foot room with a stage and bathroom access. The space can accomidate up to (211) people in a theater style set up, and up to (129) people in classroom style set up. This space is ideal for talent shows, large meetings, and large group indoor activites. Projector screen is available.

Dining Hall: The Dining Hall, attached to the Recreation Hall, is a 2,294 square foot room with restroom access. The dining hall is connected to the Center's kitchen and is typically served family style. Meal seating can accomidate up to (176) adults at 60" round tables.

Henrico Administration Building: The Administration Building is the main office building for the camp center staff. The administration building has a conference room with attached kitchen. The conference room can accomidate up to (30) adults in a meeting set up. Projector screen is available.

Clover Pavilion: Open air large pavilion located next to the recreation hall. 2,109 square feet with concrete floor and moveable picnic tables.

Varina Pavilion:Open air small pavilion located across from the campfire circle. 672 square feet with concrete floor and moveable picnic tables.

Wetlands Walkway: In 2005 this 429-foot long, elevated, wooden wetlands walkway was completed in large part to the untiring efforts of our contributors and volunteers. In September 2008 the walkway was updated to include local flora and fauna and habitat signage. Quietly strolling guests may encounter rare visits with local inhabitants such as raccoons, crabs, eagles, osprey, deer, squirrels, owls and a wide assortment of native and migrating birds. For gardeners and arborists Bald Cypress, American Holly, Black Tupelo, American Sweet gum and Pignut Hickory are throughout the area. “Bob”, our bald cypress, is reportedly over 400 years old! Imagine visiting something that was alive when John Smith and Pocahontas were walking around our area!

Pim Baker Pier: While here enjoy fishing on the 117’-long, Pim Baker Pier. River depth at the pier’s end at high tide is five feet. Fishing is available year-round. Channel Catfish, Blue Catfish, Spot, Rockfish, Flounder, and Bluegill can all be caught off the banks of the James River.

Swimming Pool: The pool may accommodate groups up to (193) people. The Shallow End depth is approximately 3 ½’, Middle End depth is approximately 5 ½’, and the Diving Well depth is approximately 12’. The Pool is available late-May through early-September.

Archery Range:Recurve, left and right-handed bows. Six (6) targets, all necessary safety equipment. Learn the parts of the bow, how to string, stance, knocking arrow, draw, anchor, and release, how to determine eye dominance. Participate in a variety of drills and games to establish marksmanship. The Center’s Archery Range Instructors are certified through the Virginia 4-H Shooting Sports Curriculum. Maximum of twelve (12) people per session.

Low Ropes Challenge Course: All programs conducted on our challenge course are physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging. The primary purpose of these programs is to challenge members of a group to overcome a series of obstacles by working together as a team and further promoting self-confidence, leadership, and respect. As every group that visits our center is unique, the objectives of each program are molded to suit the needs and goals of the group. The primary focuses include but are not limited to teamwork, communication, leadership, respect and understanding of individual differences and increased self-esteem and self-image of participants. This program offers a fantastic component in developing a foundation for individual and group success! All facilitation, instruction, and equipment is provided by the 4-H Center. Our facilities are approved by the American Camp Association (ACA) and all facilitators have been fully trained and qualified to facilitate challenge course programming.

Basketball Courts: The Center has (2) basketball courts to utilize throughout the year. The courts are located adjacent to the Swimming Pool. Courts have also been used as floors to tents for larger events such as receptions. There is no cost to groups staying overnight for use of the court.

Field: The Center has a large, 1.2 acre field that can accommodate very easily a softball tournament or other outdoor event.
